September is Mold Awareness Month

Mold awareness month is a perfect time to consider the indoor air quality of your home and business.

September is mold awareness month

Mold is one of the most important items to keep an eye on to make sure you have clean air and a healthy environment. With rainy fall weather on its way, we recommend homeowners always be on the lookout for potential sources of mold growth.

Exposure to mold is linked to upper respiratory tract systems even for healthy people and can cause health issues such as:

  • Eye irritation
  • Wheezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Headache
  • Throat irritation
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Skin irritation

To raise awareness about mold, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designates the month of September as National Indoor Mold Awareness Month.

Here are a few tips to follow to keep mold out of your home or business:

  1. Humidity. The ideal humidity for a home is between 30 and 50 percent. Visit your local hardware store and pick up a moisture or humidity meter. Or call us at 619-596-3888 for an in home inspection.
  2. Leaks. Check roofs, foundations, faucets and pipes for leaks. If you find a leak, call TSC Restoration and have us fix it ASAP!
  3. Ground Water. Check the exterior of your home for the accumulation of ground water, which can cause mold. If you find ground water call your favorite plumber to help out or route water away using downspouts and re-grade landscaping to slope water away from the home.
  4. Odors. If you find a leak, the first sign of mold may be musty or moldy odors near the leak area.

Never sniff for mold, or touch mold. If you suspect a mold problem contact a certified mold inspector like us ASAP.
